Long before Gallipoli, more than 7,000 New Zealanders travelled to South Africa to serve in the Boer War (1899–1902), marking our nation's first overseas military campaign. Their experiences helped shape New Zealand's military identity, yet their story has largely faded from public memory.
This exhibition explores the lives of the men who served, the challenges they faced on the South African veldt, and the lasting impact of a conflict often overlooked in our history.
At the heart of the exhibition is a rare and authentic New Zealand Boer War uniform, displayed alongside original artefacts, photographs, personal stories, and historical research that bring this chapter of New Zealand's past back into the spotlight.
