Trains, tracks and stations played an important role in Papakura and the outlying district in a period before motorway congestion and the internet. They enabled commuting for work, school and study, excursions and sport, brought goods, moved produce, provided jobs and other government services. They also provided occasion for intense inter-district rivalry and occasional excitement with derailments and accidents. In the nineteenth century there were 5 stations between Pukekohe and Papakura, and none between Papakura and Manurewa. Some of these stations will be coming back in a new phase of rail development.
